Carr received a B.S. degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Born in Chicago, she and her husband moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1988. She then joined New York Life Insurance Company as a Career Agent and Field Trainer. Later, opening her own agency and working primarily with Postal and Federal Employees, helping them get a better understanding of the benefits offered them by the government. Which included retirement planning.
